Tips for Getting More Reviews

Timing Is Everything

Send your review request the same day the job is done — ideally within an hour of leaving. Response rates drop significantly after 24 hours. The customer is happiest right now.

Make It Personal, Not Spammy

Use the customer's name. Mention the specific job. Generic "please leave us a review" messages get ignored. A message that references their actual project shows you remember them and appreciate their business.

Keep the Link Front and Center

Don't make them hunt for your review page. Send a direct link in the text message. For Google, go to your Google Business Profile, click "Get more reviews," and copy the short link. Pin it somewhere you can grab it fast.

Follow Up Once (Only Once)

If they haven't reviewed after a week, one follow-up is okay. Two or more feels pushy. Don't beg — just a quick "Hey, did you get my message?" is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to ask a customer for a review?

The best time is right when the job is done and the customer is happy — ideally before you even leave the driveway. Same-day follow-up via text gets dramatically higher response rates than waiting days or weeks.

What platform should I ask customers to review me on?

Google is the most valuable for most contractors — it directly impacts your local search ranking. If you're already strong on Google, focus secondary efforts on Yelp or Facebook. Nextdoor is excellent for neighborhood-focused trades like lawn care and handyman.

Is it legal to ask customers for reviews?

Yes — asking for honest reviews is completely legal and encouraged. You cannot pay for reviews, offer discounts in exchange, or post fake reviews. Simply asking happy customers to share their experience is the right approach.
